U.S. Army wins Armed Forces Championship for sixth straight year



The U.S. Army took first place in the Armed Forces Championships for the sixth year in a row this past weekend.

The Army had six gold medalists in the freestyle competition and five gold medalists in Greco-Roman.

The U.S. Marine Corps took second in the team standings, U.S. Air Force third and U.S. Navy took fourth in both styles.

Jacob Clark (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps) won the gold medal at 84 kg/185 lbs. in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. In his title match in freestyle, Clark beat Willie Parks of the U.S. Army, 5-0, 2-6, 3-0. Clark took down Aaron Sieracki of the U.S. Army, 1-1, 4-0, in the finals of the Greco-Roman competition.

Eric Albarracin (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) also won in freestyle and Greco-Roman at 55 kg/121 lbs. In his freestyle matches, Albarracin won by technical fall against Lowel Topham of the U.S. Navy and Andrew Hogan of the U.S. Marines Corps. Albarracin also beat Anthony Brooker of the Air Force 5-4, 4-1. Albarracin beat Andrew Hogan (U.S. Marine Corps) 6-0, 6-0 in the finals of the Greco-Roman competition.

Philip Simpson (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) pinned two of his opponents to win the gold medal in freestyle at 74 kg/163 lbs. Simpson pinned Peter Hicks of the U.S. Air Force in 54 seconds to advance to the finals. In the finals, he pinned Juan Ramos of the U.S. Marine Corps in 22 seconds. Simpson won his first match by technical fall against Peter Butville, 6-0, 8-2.

Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) won his championship match by technical fall against Jose Sanches of the U.S. Marine Corps, 8-0, 6-0. He also beat Mark Simmonds of the U.S. Navy, 4-0, 1-1 and Brenden McLean of the U.S. Air Force 6-0, 4-0.

All gold medal winners are eligible to represent the U.S. Armed Forces in the CISM Military World Games, October 12-22 in Hyderabad, India. Rob Hermann of the Navy will represent the team as head coach, and Maj. Dan Hicks of the Marine Corps was named assistant coach.
