Larry Nugent named Director of Development for USA Wrestling

Larry Nugent of Colorado Springs, Colo. has been named Director of Development for USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States. Nugent will direct all USA Wrestling's fundraising activity, including those specific to the capital campaign. He will also direct all USA Wrestling marketing, promotions, corporate sponsorship and brand development projects. He has worked for USA Wrestling as the Assistant to the Executive Director, since joining the national staff in January 1998. "Larry's performance over the last two years has earned him this opportunity," said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. "His experience as an elite athlete and coach will serve him well as he directs one of our most important programs. I am confident that under Larry's leadership, our development efforts will continue to expand and have a very positive impact on USA Wrestling and the entire sport." "I believe that wrestling is not only 'the world's oldest and greatest sport,' but that its supporters and benefactors are, in a large part, responsible for this greatness," said Nugent. "I am honored to be in a position to help continue the successful development of USA Wrestling." Nugent will be responsible for working on the "Wrestling for the Next Millennium" capital campaign, a joint campaign with the goal of raising $10 million on behalf of USA Wrestling, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum and the National Wrestling Coaches Association. Larry has a long and successful career within wrestling as an administrator, broadcaster, coach and athlete. As Assistant to the Executive Director, Nugent managed a grant program from the U.S. Olympic Committee to five NCAA conferences covering wrestling projects. These grants were established to provide scholarships, equipment, clinics and television coverage for threatened and emerging NCAA/Olympic sports. Nugent also served as an Assistant Producer in USA Wrestling's broadcast division. He assisted in the production of many high school, college and international telecasts. During the past year, Larry has also served as on-air play-by-play talent on the telecasts, which were broadcast on national and regional television. Prior to joining USA Wrestling, Nugent served as an assistant wrestling coach and faculty instructor at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Before joining the Brigham Young program, Nugent was the head wrestling coach and instructor at Pacific University from 1992-95. Pacific placed in the Top 10 of the National Intercollegiate Athletic Association (NAIA) National Championships for three straight years with Nugent as coach. In 1994, Larry also coached an NAIA wrestling team on an international exchange to Russia. As Chairman of the Oregon Wrestling Coaches Association's Public Relations Committee, Nugent was responsible for the production and marketing of the first telecast of the Oregon State Wrestling Championship on FOX Sports Northwest. He also procured sponsorship to underwrite "Pennsylvania Wrestling Legends," a 60 Minute VHS documentary on the legacy of Pennsylvania Wrestling. Nugent created and entered into a joint marketing agreement with the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association to promote and sell the documentary. Larry has also been a member of the Veterans Selection Committee of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum. Nugent was also a successful athlete on the national level. He qualified for the Final Olympic Trials in Greco-Roman wrestling in 1980 and the Final Olympic Trials in freestyle wrestling in 1988. He won a silver medal in the 1985 U.S. Olympic Festival. He attended Southern Oregon University, where he received a bachelor's degree in 1986 and a Master's degree in 1994. He was a two-time NAIA All-American wrestler at Southern Oregon, and a member of the 1978 NAIA national champion team. Nugent and his wife Carrie have a daughter named Carly. His hobbies are collecting historic wrestling footage, scuba diving and physical fitness.
