Minnesota's C.P. Schlatter named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 9-15

C.P. Schlatter (Massillon, Ohio/University of Minnesota) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Jan. 9-15.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Schlatter returned to the Golden Gophers lineup from a knee injury in grand fashion, compiling a perfect 4-0 record at 157 pounds to spark Minnesota to the team title at the National Duals on Jan. 13-14 in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

The No. 8 Schlatter knocked off No. 2 Trent Paulson of Iowa State 5-4 in the Gophers' 24-11 semifinal win over the Cyclones. He followed by rallying for a 6-5 win over No. 12 Michael Chandler to Missouri that lifted the No. 2 Gophers to a 20-16 win over No. 1 Missouri in the final round.

Schlatter trailed 3-0 entering the final period against Chandler before gaining three third-period takedowns to earn the victory.

Schlatter, a junior, is a two-time NCAA qualifier and 2006 Big Ten champion. He is an Academic All-American and two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection.

Schlatter's brother, Dustin, a sophomore, won an NCAA title at 149 pounds in 2006. Dustin is ranked No. 1 at 149 again this season.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
