Cornellís Nothern named Iowa Conference Wrestler of the Week

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Cornell freshman Nick Nothern (Salina, Kan.) has been named Iowa Conference Wrestler of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 7. Nothern won the 133-pound weight class at the 29th Annual Cornell Matman Invitational on Jan. 6.

He opened the tournament with a pin of Central's Nick Johnson (3:59), and then posted three straight decisions - 6-0 over Wartburg's Sean White, 9-4 over St. John's (Minn.) Tim Thompson, and 8-5 over William Penn's Nick Cucciniello - to advance to the championship match. In the final, Nothern defeated fourth-rated Jestin Hulegaard of Buena Vista on riding time criteria following a 5-5 double-overtime tie.

Nothern has won 12 consecutive matches and now has a season record of 25-6. A 2006 graduate of Salina South High School, Nothern is the son of Glen and Karla Nothern, Salina.

Cornell is rated No. 16 in NCAA Division III.
