Gabriel Dretsch named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Gabriel Dretsch (Frazee, Minn./University of Minnesota) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Dec. 5-11.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

The 13th-ranked Dretsch earned a 3-1 win over No. 8 Brandon Mason to lift the No. 3 ranked Gophers to a 21-15 win over top-ranked and four-time defending NCAA champion Oklahoma State on Dec. 6 in Minneapolis.

The team score was tied 12-12 before Dretsch, a junior, pulled off the pivotal win at 174 pounds. Dretsch scored a takedown late in the first period for what turned out to be the deciding factor in the match. Dretsch was 1-2 against Mason last season.

Dretsch, a two-time NCAA qualifier, is 12-3 this season.
