Olympic Silver Medalist Matt Lindland wins title at the Takhti Cup in Mashhad, Iran, Feb. 23 Matt Lindland(Oregon City, Ore./Sunkist Kids) won the title at 187.25 pounds in Greco-Roman wrestling at the 20th Takhti Cup in Mashhad, Iran, Feb. 23. Two freestyle wrestlers added silver medals for the U.S. : Lee Fullhart (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 187.25 pounds and Chad Lamer (Coralville, Iowa/Hawkeye WC) at 213.75 pounds. In preliminary action, Lindland decisioned Nikkhov of Iran, 3-1 in overtime and then pinned Cozorgi of Iran. In the semifinals he won by a technical fall over Nahdan of Iran, 10-0. In the gold-medal finals, Lindland scored a 8-0 decision over Nikhov of Iran. Fullhart finished his preliminary action with a pin over Efatar of Iran, then a close 1-1 overtime decision over Dorostkar of Iran. In semifinal action he decisioned Shekosteh of Iran, 3-0, then lost a 2-1 overtime decision to Quanbari of Iran in the gold-medal finals. Lamer lost only to champion Ali Reza Heidari in the tournament. First in preliminary action and then in the gold-medal finals. Chris Bono (Gilbert, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) made is to the bronze-medal finals at 152 pounds. He decisioned Mohammadi of Iran, 5-1 in overtime and Amez of Iran 4-2 in preliminary action. He lost a close 2-2 overtime decision to Tavakolian of Iran in the semifinals. He met Baraati of Iran in the bronze-medal match and lost the decision 3-1. 1999 World Champion Stephen Neal (Bakersfield, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) placed fourth at 286 pounds. He pinned Govier of Turkey in the preliminaries before having to injury withdrawal in the semifinals to Mehrban of Iran. The United States placed second in the team standings.
