UPDATED: Five U.S. wrestlers win medals at the Veterans World Freestyle Championships in Latvia



The United States won four medals at the Veterans World Championships in Riga, Latvia, August 4-6. Veterans are athletes 35 years old and above. There are five age divisions in Veterans wrestling.

Capturing a silver medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in Div. E was past Veterans World champion Shirzad Ahmadi of Coventry, Conn.

Ahmadi won three of his four bouts in his weight class, which was contested as a five-athlete roundrobin. He opened with a victory of Massaki Hatta of Japan, who is a resident of Michigan. In the next round, he dropped a bout to eventual champion Khosorov Zamani of Iran. He finished off with two more wins, stopping Vanik Margarian of Russia and Richard Goretzki of Germany.

Winning bronze medals were Ronald Hughes of Hollister, Calif. at 69 kg/152 lbs. in Div. B, Steve Hart of Arvada, Colo., at 58 kg/127.75 lbs. in Div. D and Gerald Silva of Mechanicsburg, Pa. and Jim Lucas of Santa Cruz, Calif. at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in Div. D.

Hughes, a past Veterans World champion in Greco-Roman, had a 2-1 record in the tournament, with victories over Valeruis Gonc Arovs of Latvia and Imanian Shariyar of Germany.

Hart also had a 2-1 record, beating Moini Feridoon of Germany and Jacek Gawor of Poland, and losing only to the eventual champion

Silva was in a four-athlete roundrobin, and had a 1-2 record, taking third in the weight class. Lucas also received a bronze medal at the division.

All eight U.S. wrestlers who participated placed in the top 10 of their divisions Other U.S. wrestlers who earned a placement were:
- Tim Boda of Baldwinsville, N.Y., fifth at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in Div. A
- Kenneth Peters of Elmhurst, Ill. who was fifth at 85 kg/187.5 lbs. in Div. E
- Craig Johnson of Broomfield, Colo.., who was seventh at 69 kg/152 lbs. in Div. E

Jim Lucas of Santa Cruz, Calif. served as Team Leader for the U.S. delegation.
