Four returning champion unbeaten on first day at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior Greco-Roman Nationals

FARGO, N.D. - All four of the returning Junior National Greco-Roman champions are unbeaten after the first day of action at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Greco-Roman Championships, which began on Sunday.

Two of these wrestlers are competing at 105 pounds, Marty Eng of Oregon and Boris Novachkov of California. Eng was a champion last year at 105 pounds, while Novachkov won his title at 98 pounds.

The other two unbeaten returning champions are Shawn Jones of Idaho at 125 pounds and Jesse Robbins of Florida at 171 pounds.

The tournament featured four rounds of action on Sunday, with numerous past All-Americans on the Junior and Cadet levels competing.

The only past Junior All-American eliminated with two losses on Sunday was Rocco Depaolo of Colorado, who went 1-2 at 135 pounds. Depaolo was third at the Junior Nationals in Greco-Roman last year at 130 pounds.

A number of prominent Junior National runners-up were defeated, although they still alive in the double elimination format. Joey Martin of Connecticut, who was second at 119 pounds last year, was defeated in the second round by Justin Solberg of North Dakota. Martin was also a runner-up this year at the FILA Junior Nationals.

Past Junior All-Americans who also dropped a match on Sunday included Kellen Aura of California, who was second last year at 105 pounds. Aura was beaten in the third round at 112 pounds by Andy Pokorny of Nebraska.

Jake Quinton of Pennsylvania, second last year at 98 pounds, dropped his opening match at 105 pounds to Colby Lensing of Minnesota.

Other Junior All-Americans who dropped early matches on Sunday were Zach Pope of Ohio at 119 pounds, Cameron Drye of North Carolina at 125 pounds, Jake Mellmer of North Dakota at 130 pounds, Jake Swenson of Utah at 135 pounds, Rudy Moures of Maryland at 145 pounds, Jake Kerr of Iowa at 160 pounds and Bryant Deinhart of New York at 275 pounds.

Competition continues on Monday, with finals set for Tuesday.-
