Fortune unbeaten at Accelerade Cadet Greco-Roman Nationals; Mango among three qualified for finals

FARGO, N.D. - Returning Cadet double champion Tyrell Fortune of Oregon remains unbeaten after the second day of the Accelerade Cadet National Greco-Roman Championships at the Fargodome Sunday. Cadets are wrestlers who are 15 and 16 years old.

Fortune is returning at 215 pounds, where he was a Cadet Nationals double champion last year, winning both freestyle and Greco-Roman titles. He hopes to join an exclusive group of wrestlers who have won four Cadet National gold medals, the most possible during the two years of eligibility.

Fortune has qualified for the roundrobin in his pool, which will be completed on Monday morning. He has a 5-0 record over two days, including three pins and two technical falls.

Ryan Mango of Missouri, the younger brother of 2006 University World Greco-Roman champion Spenser Mango, qualified for the finals at 84 pounds. Mango won his final pool match, defeating Jacoby Bergeron of Minnesota, 7-0, 7-0. The first period lasted 16 seconds and the second period was 21 seconds, with each period consisting of a takedown and three gut wrenches.

The two other wrestler who have already clinched a spot in the championship finals are Jake Love of Montana at 105 pounds and Paul Snyder of Pennsylvania at 275 pounds.

At 98 pounds, Cadet Nationals runner-up David Taylor of Ohio, had a 6-0 record after two days, including four technical falls. He was second at 91 pounds last year.

Also at 98 pounds, Wade Adams of Minnesota, a Cadet runner-up last year at 84 pounds, was eliminated with two losses on Sunday. He was defeated by BJ Futrell of Illinois, who was third in the Cadet Nationals last year at 91 pounds in the fifth round, then fell to Mark Rappo of Pennsylvania in the sixth round.

The other returning runners-up, Travis Rutt of Minnesota at 152 pounds and Tico Paca of California at 171 pounds, remain alive in their weight class after two days

Six wrestlers who entered the Greco-Roman tournament with a chance to win the Cadet Triple Crown, which is given to any wrestler who wins the USA Wrestling Cadet National titles in folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle during the same year. The first leg of the Cadet Triple Crown, the Cadet Folkstyle Nationals, was held in Iowa in April.

Rutt is among three wrestlers who still have a chance to win the Triple Crown, if they capture their weight classes on Monday. Also still in the competition in their weight classes are folkstyle national champions Nate Moore of Iowa at 119 pounds and Dallas Bailey of Oklahoma at 140 pounds.
At 119 pounds, Jaes Jones of Utah, who was third at the Junior Nationals last year at 98 pounds, was eliminated in the seventh round, losing to Joe Cozart of Florida, 2-3, 4-0, 4-0.
