Joe Warren named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for May 30-June 5

Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of May 30-June 5.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

Warren turned in a dominating performance en route to earning a gold medal at the Pan American Championships on June 2 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Warren rolled to three lopsided wins in capturing the Greco-Roman title at 60 kg/132 lbs.

Warren pinned Guatemala's Milton Orellana in the finals. He beat Venezuela's Luis Liendo 6-2, 3-1 in the quarterfinals and Cuba's Osmany Duca 7-0, 3-0 in the semifinals. Duca won the Pan American Championships in 2003 and 2004.

Warren's win in Brazil came just a week after he won the U.S. World Team Trials in Sioux City, Iowa. Warren, 29, who was an All-American at the University of Michigan, made his second straight World Team.

Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
