Dave Hoffman hired as assistant coach at Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Dave Hoffman has been brought on as an assistant wrestling coach at Bucknell, head coach Dan Wirnsberger announced on Friday. Hoffman will join Wirnsberger and assistant coach Larry Sprecher as a part of the recently reinstated Bison wrestling program.

"I am extremely excited to announce that Dave Hoffman will be joining our wrestling staff," said Wirnsberger. "He brings great credentials along with youthful energy. Dave is originally from Pennsylvania and therefore he will be a huge asset in terms of in-state recruiting. Dave will be able to relate to our young team and will play a major factor in the development of our light to middle weight athletes. This is a significant step as we continue to bring Bison wrestling back as a major player in Division I wrestling."

Hoffman, a Spring City, Pa. native, will be responsible for coaching the varsity lightweights and assisting Wirnsberger and Sprecher with the overall administration of the program.

Hoffman recently completed his senior season at Virginia Tech where he was a four-time NCAA Championship qualifier and a 2006 All-American. During his career with the Hokies, Hoffman compiled a record of 116-32, including 19 major decisions, five technical falls and 38 falls. Hoffman also earned Freshman All-America honors from Amateur Wrestling News in 2002.

At The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa., Hoffman was a five-time prep All-American and two-time prep national champion, one of only two wrestlers in school history to achieve All-America status five times. He posted a record of 195-17 in his prep school career.

Bucknell will begin competition in 2006-07 as a member of the highly competitive Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association. One of the premier wrestling conferences in the nation, the EIWA had two teams finish in the top 10 at the 2006 NCAA championships. Cornell finished fifth, while five-time defending EIWA champion Lehigh placed ninth. Penn, another EIWA member, had a 2006 national champion in the 133-pound weight class. The EIWA has produced 76 NCAA champions and more than 400 All-Americans in its storied history.
