USA Wrestling to host six Kids/Cadet Regionals in May and June

USA Wrestling will be hosting its popular Kids/Cadet Regionals in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling in May and June.

The nation's top youth wrestlers will compete for Regional honors, as well as an opportunity to compete on the national level later in the year.

USA Wrestling has six Kids/Cadet regions, where athletes from specific states compete in Regional tournaments in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

For Kids wrestling, competition is for Midget (9-10 yrs.) Novice (11-12 yrs.) and Schoolboy/girl (13-14 yrs.) divisions.

In Kids wrestling, a n athlete must compete in the region which his/her state has been assigned. In order to compete at the Kids Regional, an athlete must qualify through his/her state association. Athletes who wish to participate must contact their state associations to determine the qualification requirements in their state.

In order to compete in the Kids Freestyle and Greco-Roman National Championships in Green Bay, Wis., June 28-July 1, an athlete must have been entered in his or her respective Kids Regional Championships.

Cadet wrestlers are 15 and 16 years old. This year, for the first time, a Cadet wrestler can attend any of the Cadet Regionals. In the past, a Cadet was required to qualify for the Cadet Regionals through his state association and could only compete in the region where he lives. This year, it has opened up, and Cadets can travel to as many Regionals as they wish.

In five of the remaining Cadet Regionals, the top three placewinners in each weight class at a Cadet Regional qualifies for their state team for the ASICS/Vaughan Cadet Nationals. The only Cadet Regional that is not a qualifier for the Cadet Nationals is the West Cadet Regionals in Klamath Falls, Ore. Athletes from the West were able to qualify through the Northwest Cadet competition held in Washington in March.
