Civan named OW in freestyle at FILA Cadet Nationals

EVANSTON, Ill. - Eren Civan's ability to regroup in a hurry earned him a gold medal Sunday afternoon at the FILA Cadet Nationals.

The Maryland wrestler dropped the first period of the 152-pound freestyle finals to Pennsylvania's Alex Meade, but Civan stormed back to win the final two periods 1-1, 3-0 to claim the championship at Northwestern's Welsh Ryan Arena.

Civan and Meade both won Cadet National titles last summer in Fargo, N.D.

It also was a big weekend for Michigan's Jarod Trice (275) and Illinois' D.J. Bruce (187.25). Trice and Bruce captured freestyle championships Sunday to go with the Greco-Roman titles they each won on Friday.

Trice split the first two periods with Ohio's John Hiles in the finals before he recorded a fall with five seconds left in the third period.

Bruce was dominant in recording a 6-0, 9-2 technical fall over Iowa's Dylan Wrage in the title bout.

Double Cadet National champion Andrew Long of Iowa came up just short in his quest to become a double FILA Cadet National champ. Long was third in freestyle Sunday at 101.25 pounds after winning a title in Greco-Roman on Friday. Ohio's Logan Steiber pinned Florida's Eric Chandler just 31 seconds into the finals at 101.25 pounds.

Cadet National champ Michael Mangrum of Washington placed third at 127.75 pounds Sunday.

Tony Ramos of Illinois emerged to win a tough class at 110 pounds that included FILA Cadet Greco-Roman champion Eric Grajales, who placed third in freestyle. Another FILA Cadet Greco-Roman champion, Missouri's Cody Tyler, came in third in freestyle at 92.5 pounds.

The balance of the FILA Cadet freestyle champions included Ohio's Jamie Clark (92.5), Iowa's Nate Moore (119) and Eric Thompson (220.25), New York's Corey Jantzen (127.75), Pennsylvania's Zack Kemmerer (138.75) and Idaho's Kirk Smith (167.5).

Moore, a runner-up at Cadet Nationals last year, beat Cadet National champion Tyler Clark of Illinois 2-0, 2-0 in the 119-pound finals Sunday.
