|Several seeds beaten in morning session at NCAA Div. III Nationals|
By Jon Gremmels for TheMat.com
EWING, N.J. - No clear picture opened up Friday morning at the opening session of the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, but, as usual, several seeded wrestlers fell into the consolation brackets.
Wisconsin-La Crosse and Wartburg were tied for first place with 15 points, but York had a surprising start. The Spartans went 4-for-4 in the session and were in third place with 11 points. SUNY Cortland was fourth with 8 points, and Ithaca and Wisconsin-Platteville were tied for fifth with 6.5.
"The first round went well," UW-La Crosse Nate Skaar said. "It's a two-day season now, and the guys know that.
"There are three more rounds. Our goal is to improve each round. If we can do that, good things will happen."
The Eagles, the only team to have a qualifier at every weight, suffered losses at 125 and 133 pounds but won everywhere else, including two wins from two-time national champion Ryan Allen at heavyweight.
Seven of Wartburg's nine qualifiers, including two-time national champions Dustin Hinschberger (141) and Akeem Carter (184) won their opening matches and another had a bye. The only loser was freshman Zach McKray, who lost 4-3 to second-seeded Eddie Murray of Ursinus at 133 pounds.
"I want them to be a little more aggressive, but it's the national tournament and a win is a win," Wartburg coach Jim Miller said. "We know it's going to get tougher this next round."
Defending champion Augsburg sent five wrestlers into Friday night's quarterfinals, but the Auggies were tied for 15th place. Two of their wrestlers were alive in the wrestlebacks, but seventh seed Josh Hansen was ousted from the field at 141 pounds. He was knocked off by Garrett Pino of Wabash 9-5 in the preliminary round and then lost 6-4 in sudden death to eighth seed Joe Burdick of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the consolation preliminary round.
Hansen wasn't the highest seed to fall, though. Felipe Queiroz of Wilkes knocked off second-seeded Brandon McDonough of Johnson & Wales 15-7 in the first round.
In all, 16 seeded wrestlers lost, including two No. 3 seeds and two No. 4s.
Delaware Valley's Dan Hall beat third seed Mike Gaeta of Springfield 8-6 at 141, Heidelberg's Tim Maxworthy pinned No. 3 Tony Howard of McDaniel in 6 minutes, 56 seconds at 165, Oneonta's Trevor Hiffa held off a lately takedown attempt by fourth seed Mike Hayes and beat the Wisconsin-Stevens Point All-American 3-1 at heavyweight, and Buena Vista's Kyle Forness beat Augsburg's fourth-seeded Jared Evans at 149.
Maxworthy had one of the most dramatic wins of the day. Trailing 6-2 in the final 20 seconds, he took down Howard to his back and recorded the fall with 4 seconds remaining.
Forness didn't consider his 4-3 win over No. 4 Jared Evans of Augsburg much of an upset, though.
"I was ranked fifth all year, so that's no big deal to me," Forness, a freshman, said. "We had a pretty good scouting report. I watched for his snaps. The only points he got were my screwing up."
