Veterans National Freestyle and Greco-Roman Championships return to Las Vegas, Nev., April 12-13



USA Wrestling has announced that its Veterans National Championships in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling will return to Las Vegas Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., April 12-13.

This is the annual national championships for wrestlers 35 years old and above in the two international styles of wrestling.

The Veterans Nationals will be held alongside a number of other major USA Wrestling events, including the U.S. National Championships, the FILA Junior Men's National Championships and the Western Junior Regional Championships.

The Veterans competition was held in Las Vegas for a number of years, but was last hosted in Metarie, La. in 2005.

Wrestlers compete in five different age divisions in Veterans competition: Division A (35-40 years old), Division B (41-45), Division C (46-50), Division D (51-55) and Division E (56 years old and over).

The Veterans Greco-Roman competition is tentatively scheduled to be held on Wednesday, April 12, with the Veterans freestyle competition tentatively set for Thursday, April 13.

A total of 18 wrestlers won double titles last year, winning both the freestyle and Greco-Roman competition at the Veterans Nationals.

The returning double champions are:

Division A: Carlos Bertot of Louisiana at 58 kg, Rob Porter of Illinois at 63 kg and Jeff Anderson of Michigan at 85 kg.

Division B: Clinton Brooks of Missouri at 58 kg, Don Horning of Ohio at 63 kg, Ronald Hughes of California at 69 kg and Russ Schenk of Indiana at 76 kg.

Division C: Mark LaVasseur of Minnesota at 58 kg, Larrick Johnson of Tennessee at 63 kg, Gogi Parseghian of California at 69 kg and Staff Polk of New Mexico at 85 kg.

Division D: Steve Hart of Colorado at 58 kg, Peter Zurflieh of Pennsylvania at 63 kg, Ron Cole of Washington at 97 kg and Gerald Ponce of California at 130 kg.

Division E: Shirzad Ahmadi of Connecticut at 63 kg, Donald Apodaca of California at 85 kg and Joe Reasbeck of Wisconsin at 97 kg.

"We are pleased to welcome the Veterans wrestlers back to Las Vegas to participate in our biggest week of wrestling activity during the year," said Pete Isais, USA Wrestling Director of National Events. "We look forward to an excellent competition and encourage all Veterans wrestlers to make plans to attend this year."
