Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of August 16-22.

Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.

SGT Dremiel Byers won a gold medal at 120 kg /264.5 lbs. in Greco-Roman wrestling at the CISM World Military Wrestling Championships in Vilnius, Lithuania, August 19-21. This World Championship event features the best amateur athletes who are currently serving in their nation's military.

Byers defeated 2004 Olympian Marek Mikulski of Poland in the gold-medal finals.

He was one of two U.S. medalists in the competition, along with Greco-Roman bronze medalist SGT Glenn Garrison at 145.5 pounds. Byers helped lead the U.S. to an eighth place finish as a team in the Greco-Roman division in a field of 22 nations.

Byers was a 2002 World Champion. He is currently the No. 1 ranked athlete in the United States in his weight division, and will be competing this fall at the World Championships of Wrestling in Budapest, Hungary, Sept. 26-Oct. 2. Byers was a 2001 World Cup gold medalist, and has won five U.S. Nationals titles during his career.

He is a member of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program.
