Tamillow named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Mike Tamillow (Oak Park, Ill./Northwestern) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of January 25-31. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. Tamillow, a true freshman 184-pounder at Northwestern Univ., defeated then sixth-ranked Paul Bradley of Iowa 5-3 to help the Wildcats defeat Iowa 22-19. It was the first win for Northwestern over Iowa in 37 years. In the closing seconds of the match, Tamillow trailed 3-2. With his match and Northwestern's hopes of an overall victory hanging in the balance, the true freshman forced a second stalling warning on Bradley to tie the score at 3-3. He then scored a takedown over Bradley, fourth in the NCAA Tournament last year, as time expired. "Tamillow has been unbelievable all year for us. Sometimes I can't believe he's a true freshman with the way he's been performing," Northwestern head coach Tim Cysewski said after the dual. For the season Northwestern is 9-1, clinching a winning record for the first time since the 1997-98 season when the team posted a 9-8 dual record. Tamillow has posted a 20-7 record this season. He placed sixth at the Midlands Championships and captured a title at the Beast of the East. He plans to major in Communications. Click here to view previous Athletes of the Week
