Jon Spires (Lancaster, Ohio/Ohio Univ.) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of December 7-13. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Spires, a senior 141-pounder at Ohio University, won two matches at the Ohio Collegiate Championships in Athens, Ohio this past weekend to lead the Bobcats to wins over Findlay, 27-8, and in-state rival Ohio State, 21-9. Against Findlay, Spires won by major decision over Chad Turchetta, 13-3. Against Ohio State, a team that tied for third place in the NCAA Tournament last year, Spires downed the much-heralded freshman Jason Johnstone 7-3. Spires is now 3-2 on the season and holds a 53-38 career record. He placed third in the 2004 Mid-American Conference Championships. The Bobcats are now 3-2 on the dual season and will face Missouri, a top-15 team in all major polls, at home on Sunday.
