Pendleton named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Chris Pendleton (San Jose, Calif./Oklahoma State) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of November 16-22. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Pendleton, the defending NCAA champion at 174 lbs., recorded four wins en route to the title at the Kaufman-Brand Open in Omaha, Neb. on Saturday and then defeated Ben Askren of Missouri, a 2004 NCAA runner-up, at the NWCA All-Star Classic in Edwardsville, Ill. on Monday. At the Kaufman-Brand Open, Pendleton won two matches by fall, including a second-period pin over 2004 NCAA qualifier Paul Siemon of Hofstra, one technical fall and one decision. The win by decision was a 7-3 victory over Eric Hauan of Northern Iowa, a 2004 All-American. In the All-Star Classic, Pendleton faced Askren, whom Pendleton defeated four out of five times last year, including in the NCAA finals. Pendleton came away with a 6-3 victory in the match to improve his season record to 7-0 with four wins by fall. Pendleton currently has a career record of 85-10. He is a three-time NCAA qualifier, and placed third at the 2003 NCAA Tournament before winning the national title last year. His Oklahoma State squad has also won the last two NCAA team titles. Pendleton is a Sociology major at Oklahoma State Univ. Click here to view previous Athletes of the Week
