UNC-Greensboro’s Scolaro named SoCon Wrestler of the Week

UNCG's Joe Scolaro has been named the Southern Conference Wrestler of the Week for the week ending January 14, the league announced today. Scolaro, a freshman of Coopers Plain, NY, was 3-1 last week while leading UNCG to a 2-2 record. Scolaro's only loss of the week came in the team's loss to No. 5 Illinois against two-time NCAA qualifier Griff Powell, ranked No. 22 in the country at 157. He then proceeded to win all three of his matches at the Virginia Tech Duals January 20 in Blacksburg, VA, one of only two Spartans to do so. He pinned Stevens Carter of Howard in 6:27 in a 23-21 Spartan win, took a 5-2 decision over Aviv Bercovicz of American in a 29-21 UNCG victory, and posted a major decision over Brian Wilson, 11-0, in a 30-14 loss to No. 22 Virginia Tech. Scolaro's pin of Carter in the Howard meet, with just 33 seconds remaining in the match, proved to be the winning match as a decision would have given Howard a one-point win.
