Wood named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Oscar Wood (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of June 22-28. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Wood dominated both of his matches at the 2004 Titan Games, Built by Home Depot, and was second in voting for the Ultimate Titan Award. In his first match, Wood defeated Ucha Mjavanadz of the Republic of Georgia with a first-period pin. The pin proved to be the difference, as the U.S. downed the Republic of Georgia 13-9 in the dual meet. In his second match, Wood downed Moises Sanchez of Spain, an expected Olympic competitor, with a second-period fall helping the U.S. team to a 22-6 win. Wood is one of two first-time Olympians on the 2004 U.S. Greco-Roman squad. Click here to view previous Athletes of the Week
