Cormier named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week

Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of June 8-14. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Cormier, the 2004 U.S. Olympian at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., participated in the Freestyle Olympic Team Training Camp taking place in Palm Beach County, Fla. during the week. It was the first training cycle for the Olympic freestyle wrestlers, and was also the preparation camp for the Titan Games competition in Atlanta, Ga., June 19-20. According to coaches, Cormier was effective in his training preparation. He trained at times with two other U.S. Olympic Team members, Cael Sanderson at 85 kg/185 lbs. and Kerry McCoy at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. In addition to training, Cormier and his teammates were also active in conducting interviews with many of the area media, as well as meeting with the general public that attended the training sessions. Cormier, who was fifth in the World Championships last year in New York City, will be competing in his first Olympic Games in August. The former Oklahoma State star is originally from Lafayette, La. and is considered one of the world's best young wrestling talents. Click here to view previous Athletes of the Week
