BRISTOL, Tenn. – Top ranked Simon Fraser entered the last session of the 2013 WCWA Women’s College Nationals with the most individual finalists with six. Mike Jones’ Clan finished the meet strong by winning all six of their finals to claim its first WCWA national team title.

However, the Clan’s victory was not clinched until the absolute last match of the night, with four-time defending champion Oklahoma City still in contention. In a head –to-head matchup, Jenna McLatchy of Simon Fraser needed three periods to edge Heather O`Connor of Oklahoma City, 1-4, 4-0, 4-1. It was her first WCWA national title. Simon Fraser defeated OCU by seven team points, 116 to 109.

Three of the Simon Fraser champions won their third career WCWA national titles: Victoria Anthony (109), Helen Maroulis (130) and Danielle Lappage (160).

Maroulis, a 2012 World silver medalist for the United States, was named Outstanding Wrestler after defeating 2012 WCWA national champion Shauna Isbell of Lindenwood in the finals, 1-0, 2-0.

Repeating as WCWA national champion was 170 pounds was Justina DiStasio of Simon Fraser. Winning her first title at 143 pounds for Simon Fraser was No. 4 seed Sidney Morrison, who beat No. 2 Stephaine Geltmacher of Oklahoma City, 0-1, 3-1, 6-0.

SFU Head Coach Mike Jones was named Coach of the Year.

"You know, we have been chasing these guys a long time, so it is extremely exciting. In fact, I am probably as emotional about it as any of our championships along the way. The kids did a great job wrestling. We had to win every match in the finals to win it and we ended up doing that. It came down to the heavyweights, which is not what we really wanted to see, but it was exciting and we came out on top this time," said Jones.

Oklahoma City had a pair of two-time champions, Emily Webster at 101 pounds and Joey Miller at 116 pounds.

Third place King College had a pair of first-time champions, Kat Perez at 123 pounds and Alli Ragan at 136 pounds. Ragan, who was second in this event twice, beat Monica Ramirez of Lindenwood, 3-0, 6-0 in the finals.

Women’s college wrestling has had national championships for 10 years. Simon Fraser becomes only the fourth college to win a women’s national title, joining Oklahoma City University, the University of the Cumberlands and Missouri Valley College.
