California I beats Michigan 39-12 to win Girls Junior National Folkstyle Duals in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Opening with five straight wins in the lightweights, including three pins, California I jumped to a strong early lead and went on to dominate Team Michigan 39-12 in the finals of the Girls Junior National Folkstyle Duals on Sunday.

Scoring pins right off the bat for California I were Gabriella Garcia at 112 pounds, Savanna Barr at 117 pounds and Crystal Zamparripa at 121 pounds.

Folkstyle National champion Steffanie Hampton of Michigan stopped California’s run at 130 pounds with a victory, but California won three of the last five matches to close out the victory. Among the winners in the upperweights were Folkstyle National champions Alyssa LaFrancis of California at 159 pounds and Kaitlyn Hill of Michigan at 172 pounds.

To reach the finals, California I defeated Team Illinois, 52-15 and the Draw Team, 51-4. Team Michigan had a pair of victories to make the finals, stopping California III, 39-18, and Team Texas, 36-24.

It was the second straight year that Michigan placed second in the Girls Junior National Folkstyle Duals, after falling in the finals last year to Texas, 36-21.

California II won the third-place dual meet with a 36-24 defeat of Team Texas. California II wrestled very well in the upper weights, winning five of the last seven matches of the dual.
