Jason Bryant of Arden Hills, Minn. has been named to the new position of Coordinator of Grassroots and Social Media for USA Wrestling, the national governing body for wrestling in the United States.
Bryant, who has over a dozen years of experience within wrestling as a journalist and administrator, will join the USA Wrestling national staff on Nov. 15.
"Jason Bryant brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and skills to USA Wrestling," said Meredith Wilson, USA Wrestling's Director of Information Technology. "Jason will bring a fresh new approach, allowing USA Wrestling to remain on the cutting edge and expand its online and grassroots promotional efforts. I believe Jason's extraordinary knowledge and experience in wrestling makes him an incredibly valuable asset to the organization. He has been involved with USA Wrestling at many levels for several years and we are proud to welcome Jason to the USA Wrestling team."
He will work in the Information Technology department. Bryant will work on a variety of projects dealing with the USA Wrestling's internet presence, including its community website, social media strategy, broadcast properties and targeted external communications. He will also help develop and expand state association promotional and marketing activities.
"I'm pleased with the opportunity to be able to work with USA Wrestling on new initiatives involving both the grassroots development of our programs and furthering the brand and quality of work within the social media element. I feel very confident that the efforts USA Wrestling will be putting forward will not only inform, but bring together our wrestling constituency nationwide."
Bryant most recently served as a production manager for Media Sports Productions in Minneapolis, Minn., where he produced a variety of video, radio and print features for the website Wrestling 411. While there, Bryant was one of the hosts of Wrestling 411's regular internet broadcasts. He also handled the video editing duties for the organization. While in that position, he was contracted by the NCAA to broadcast the NCAA Div. II and Div. III National Championships via CBS' All-Access player.
Previously, he served three years as the Director of Media Relations for the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA). Among his duties was directing all aspects of the InterMat website, one of the nation's most respected internet outlets. He produced national rankings, feature stories, match coverage, audio and video interviews and many other content features for InterMat. Under his tutelage, InterMat was named National Wrestling Media Association (NWMA) Website of the Year for 2007. He also handled a number of other promotional and administrative duties for the NWCA.
He worked for eight years in a variety of functions for the Daily Press in Newport News, Va., including serving as a writer, copy editor and page designer for the daily newspaper. He covered high school and college sports, and was the prep wrestling beat reporter for three years.
While still in high school, Bryant founded Mat Talk On-line, a independent website covering wrestling in Virginia. He managed the site for eight years, providing in-depth coverage of all levels of the sport within the state.
He has been a public address announcer for major wrestling events on many levels, including the Virginia AAA State Wrestling Tournament, the Virginia Duals, the EIWA Wrestling Championships and numerous local, state and regional competitions.
Bryant served as publicity director for Virginia USA Wrestling from 1999-2005, helping publicize the activities of the organization as well as the achievement of Virginia wrestlers. He reported results for the organization for seven years from the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships. During the same time, he was the media director for Virginia Challenge Wrestling, Inc., a non-profit grassroots wrestling organization in Virginia.
He is currently a regular columnist for the respected publication W.I.N. Magazine.
Bryant has won numerous awards for his achievements within wrestling. He was the 2007 Bob Dellinger Amateur Wrestling News Wrestling Writer of the Year, as well as the 2007 W.I.N. Magazine Journalist of the Year. Other honors include the 2001 Billy Vandiver AAU National Volunteer of the Year, as well as the Wrestling USA Magazine Virginia State Man of the Year.
Bryant received a bachelor's of science degree in Communications, with a minor in Journalism, from Old Dominion University. While a student there, he was the sports director for WODU Radio, the editor-in-chief and graphic designer for the student newspaper Mace & Crown and an announcer for ODU wrestling, field hockey, soccer and baseball events. He announced the NCAA Div. I Field Hockey semifinals and finals match while a student there.
"I've worked with USA Wrestling regularly for the last 8-9 years, so I'll be ready to hit the ground running on projects that impact not just our wrestling public, but the state organizations as well. I'm thankful for the opportunity and think the best is yet to come from our organization," Bryant said.
